£10,000 in grants for Brighton & Hove designers

A £10,000 package of grants and support is on offer to help local designers boost their business. Brighton & Hove City Council and Creative Brighton, which represents creative industries in the city, want to help 10 local designers break into new markets and export their products abroad.

The specialist support is aimed at people such as furniture designers, jewellers, textile designers, lighting designers, and ceramicists, designing and making goods in Brighton & Hove and neighbouring Adur.

The innovative grant scheme has been set up in partnership with UK Trade and Investments (UKTI), British Design Innovation, with funding from the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA).

The ten chosen designers will each receive a package of support worth more than £1,000, made up of:

  • A £500 grant to research and develop new markets
  • A year’s silver membership of British Design Innovation, providing expert business and trade support
  • Export advice and guidance from UK Trade and Investment to help expansion into overseas markets

The initiative is part of ongoing work to develop and support the creative industries sector in Brighton & Hove and the surrounding area, which is an important local source of employment.

Councillor Sue John, deputy leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, said: “We have a huge number of talented creative people working in the area, but many are so busy running their business day-to-day they don’t have the time or specialist knowledge to develop new markets.

“This scheme gives ten designers a great opportunity to take their goods to a much wider market and help the city’s creative businesses go from strength to strength. The grant could, for example, cover the cost of attending a business fair or export trade mission and expert support will help them to access new markets. ”

Closing date for designers to apply for to be considered for the scheme is Friday June 23.
