The AGM of the Brighton & Hove Hotels Association at Brighton’s Sea Life Centre this week was attended by over 70 owners of hotels and guesthouses, and proved to be an informative, fun and extremely sociable occasion.
The event was held on Wednesday 24 May with members meeting at 7pm to hear Mark Jones's speech (recently elected Chair), which included updates on the water shortage, new legislation concerning food safety and hygiene, the Disability Discrimination Act, and the proposal to levy a Bed Tax. A Membership and Treasurer’s report were heard, and other formalities completed, including the election of the immediate past Chairman, Shaun Trumble, to his new role as Treasurer.
Mark Jones who has been campaigning to increase the membership of the Association, said “Accommodation owners have invested in the business of the city, attracting tourists and visitors to stay in Brighton and Hove, and by joining the Brighton & Hove Hotel’s Association, they can have a stake in the city’s future successes.”
Non-member hotel and guesthouse owners were invited along to enjoy wine and canapés with the members later in the evening, followed by a presentation on the new accommodation star rating system by Pam Foden of VisitBritain, and Andrew Walker from Quality in Tourism. A wine presentation by Matthew Clark ended the evening in a convivial atmosphere, and with a promise from the committee for future social events with guest speakers, on topics of mutual interest and concern for the local hotel industry.
