Another gap in the skills market
The energy sector could face a recruitment crisis as the number of engineering graduates dwindles to record lows particularly lineworkers that maintain and repair electricity pylons.
A report by the Sector Skills Council suggests that transmission companies need another 600 for work due to start at the end of the month and by 2012 over 1,800 more will be needed. But trainee recruitment levels are currently running at just 200 per annum.
Inevitably companies are looking to eastern Europe, particularly Poland and Serbia to make up the shortfall but this is not a sustainable strategy in the long term.
