Google eyes up the High Street
Google has a new scheme to reach out to retailers in the UK and help them reach new markets in a way that complements their existing bricks & mortar outlets. Should shops be worried?
This involves the now well established search advertising techniques but also a new product inspired by the runaway success of Craigslist – the American classified advertising site - called Google Base which facilitates e-commerce.
It offers shopping across a range of brands and industries via a single gateway, which saves online shoppers the hassle of visiting a multitude of different sites with varying degrees of complexity and reliability. Basically those with an online presence would upload their items for sale onto Google single site and shoppers would buy from there.
The plan has received a very cautious welcome by retailers
