French Nuclear Energy firm to target UK
The French energy giant EDF, which is a major employer in the city, is rumoured to be positioning itself to take advantage of the changing government attitude towards nuclear power. It is in an ideal position because it currently owns and operates 56 nuclear power plants in France.
Planners at EDF estimate that it would take a decade to build the first new £1000megawatt pressurised water nuclear reactor in the UK at a cost of about £1.1bn. It would produce enough electricity for about 1 million homes.
If the government commits to nuclear power there will almost certainly be interest from German companies that have experience in the nuclear field. The uncertainty over secure gas and oil energy supplies (see earlier stories in knowledgebase) and the pressing concerns of climate change are putting increasing pressure on the government.
