Footfall on the high street well down on last year
Figures released today by Footfall show that the number of people visiting shops in the UK was down by just under 4% on the same week last year and, although the volume of retail sales grew by an annualised 2.2%, this compares unfavourably with the figure of 5.6% in the same period a year ago.
Brighton & Hove did not buck the national trend with footfall declining by about 5% and many independents reporting a poor Christmas trading period. By general consensus there is unlikely to be any pickup in consumer confidence in the first 6 months of 2006.
