Council concern over age of councillors
A cross party group of Brighton & Hove councillors has expressed concern that the average age of a councillor is now 57 and the body is dominated by the 66% that are retired or economically inactive. Only seven councillors out of the total 54 are under 40. None are under 30.
Councillors Craig Turton (Labour aged 37), Simon Williams (Green aged 34) and Paul Elgood (LibDem aged 34) are asking the council to start meetings later in the day at 6.00 p.m. so that people that work can attend. They hope that this will encourage younger people to become councillors.
They also hope to attract more people from ethnic minorities to better reflect the demography of the city.
