Latest figures for 2005 from the Office of National Statistics show that workers in the city still lag behind the average wage for both the south-east and the UK as a whole.
People that work in the city (but don’t necessarily live here) earn an average of £380/week. This is over 10% below the UK figure of £424 and over 13% below the average wage in the a south east region which includes high performing areas like Surrey and Berkshire.
People living in the city (but not necessarily working here) fare a lot better earning £422/week compared to a UK average of £424. But they are still considerably below the south east average of £475/week. This reflects the number of people who commute out of the city to better paid jobs in London. Brighton is a net exporter of the workforce with 5,000 more people leaving the city on a daily basis to work than entering it.
