VisitBrighton, the organisation that markets Brighton & Hove as a tourist destination, has focused its efforts over the last year on drawing more overseas visitors. The web site has been an important tool in this regard and efforts have also been made with overseas media.
Brighton & Hove has appeared in magazines, newspapers and television shows in countries from Japan to Canada to Holland. Visitbrighton estimates that this media coverage gained for the city over the last year has produced exposure with an equivalent advertising value of £1.6m.
Some of the highlights include a four-page feature in Japanese Harper’s Bazaar about the Brighton locations used for the film Wimbledon; a feature in Singapore Maxim on Brighton & Hove's live music scene and amazing choice of second hand record shops and a feature on a major German TV Channel about bohemian Brighton.
Other press features have included titles such as Elle, Marie Claire, De Telegraaf (a leading Dutch newspaper), Oriental Daily News (a leading Hong Kong newspaper), Bangkok Post, The Guardian, TV Times and The Times.
It would appear that more than half the visitors to visitbrighton.com, the city’s tourism website, are from abroad. And feedback from hotels in the city indicate an increase in overseas visitors.
