Unchallenging new homes target for Brighton & Hove
The City is being asked to build just over 11,000 new homes over the next 20 years as its contribution to the South East Plan target of 28,900 across the entire south east. Given its past rate of house building this shouldn’t be a problem.
Councillor Gill Mitchell, chair of Brighton & Hove’s environment committee, said: “We believe our draft figure to be a realistic one based on the technical work undertaken. “Once the draft figure is approved it will be the public’s turn to have their say on the proposed allocation for Brighton & Hove. We need to decide how much growth we can sustain, balancing infrastructure and environmental considerations with maintaining the city’s popularity and economic growth.”
Sites for a potential 10,000 new homes are already identified in the Local Plan and the figure of 11,052 will be discussed at Policy & Resources committee in December and before that there will be a public consultation period starting in mid September.
