Shoppers and traders in George Street, Hove welcomed the arrival of a new Farmers’ Market on Saturday 23 July. The event marks the start of regular monthly Farmers’ Markets in Hove’s busy pedestrian shopping street. Markets will now be held on the fourth Saturday of each month with the next event taking place on 27 August.
The market was a great success, offering a wide range of locally produced food, from pies and pasta, to cheese, chutney and chocolate. All the stalls were run by the food producers themselves, who reported brisk business, and attracted many new shoppers into the area.
The market is being run by the Common Cause Co-operative, which runs the successful Lewes Market, and is supported by the council’s Sustainability Commission and the Brighton & Hove Food Partnership.
George Street Traders and members of the Hove Business Partnership and Hove Business Association were also involved in the planning, and are hoping the monthly market will draw more and more shoppers into the area.
Many traders reported an increase in business last Saturday, and it is hoped that many more local businesses will benefit once the market is established. The market will be reviewed after six months
