City Car Club welcomes its first corporate member

Bonett’s Estate Agents has joined Brighton & Hove City Car Club as the first corporate member. The time has come for city centre businesses to take note. It makes sense in terms of finance and convenience to dump the idea of pool cars in favour of the City Car Club.

The company, based in St George’s Road, Kemp Town, is well known for using bikes to get to and from viewings – and this is another way of keeping car use down and helping the environment…plus saving on company car costs.

Director Paul Bonett explained, “At the moment we have three cars for business use which we need for jobs that would take too long to cycle to and in bad weather. Joining the city car club is ideal for us as there is a dedicated parking bay just yards from the office, and it will mean we can get rid of two of our cars. It’s less hassle but will be just as efficient.”

Councillor Joyce Edmond-Smith, Chair of Brighton & Hove Sustainability Commission, commented, “More and more people in the city are recognising the advantages of joining the Car Club as it provides them with a vehicle when they need to use one. It is also helping to reduce car use overall and removing cars from the streets. Car Club members think about when they need a car and use other modes of transport for some journeys.”

The car club started in September 2003, on ‘International Car Free Day’, and was developed by Hanover Community Association with support from Brighton & Hove City Council. SmartMoves, which runs Brighton & Hove’s Car Club, also operates successful clubs in London, Bristol, Edinburgh and Huddersfield.

Simon Bannister from SmartMoves said, “ Businesses of all sizes could benefit from Car Club membership in terms of cost and convenience, and we can offer 'block booking' and other features to tailor the service to meet specific requirements.

“Business use during the working day complements residential use, which tends more to evenings and weekends, and is an important part of our service as a whole."
