Gala Bingo Hall escapes demolition
Permission to demolish the Gala Bingo Hall on Portland Road and replace it with flats has been refused by the city council’s planning committee. The opportunity is now open to develop the site for recreational purposes.
An application was submitted to the committee meeting on 27 April, to knock down the former bingo hall and build a block of three to six storeys comprising 54 flats on the site.
The planning committee refused it on the grounds that the demolition of the bingo hall would represent a loss of recreational and community facilities, which is against council policy. They also felt the proposed building would be an overdevelopment in terms of size and density and would have a detrimental effect on the appearance of the street.
