New Fashion Retail Academy

Philip Green, on behalf of Arcadia, and Secretary of State for Education Ruth Kelly have announced details of the outline curriculum and procedures by which potential students can apply to enrol in a new Fashion Retail Academy.

The initial £20 million of funding to set up the Academy has been provided on a 50/50 basis by Arcadia and the DFeS/Learning and Skills Council. On an ongoing basis the Academy will be funded from the Learning and Skills Council budget and support from retailers through donations.

It will be housed in 45,000 sq ft of space in central London with adaptable teaching space over 6 floors. The central location in the heart of London is seen as an ideal place to tap into contributions from major fashion retailers in the city. It is anticipated that the Academy, which will be a centre of excellence for the sector, will be launched in late Autumn 2005.

About 60 students aged between 16 and 18 will make up the initial intake, with total student populations expected to grow to 350 over five years.

The principal idea and concept for the Fashion Retail Academy is to train and prepare the next generation for the retail work place by teaching and developing the fundamental skills required in the retail industry. The curriculum has been created to encourage entrepreneurial talents, through both unique behind the scenes insight and direct contact on a regular basis with CEO’s and senior retail executives from many different areas of the industry. The ultimate aim is to encourage students to join established fashion retailers or to go on to run their own businesses within the retail industry.

The Academy will offer two qualifications:- A one year Diploma of Fashion Retail which will be the equivalent to GCSE and a 2 year Diploma of Fashion Retail which will be the equivalent to A Level.
