The Business Forum’s Business Crime Reduction Partnership (BCRP) is seeking Home Office funding to ease the administrative burden of sharing photos of known offenders with its 250 members.
At present the Business Forum spends in excess of £10,000 p.a. distributing the Sussex Police photos in hard copy format using two dedicated administrative assistants who deliver them to each member’s premises by hand. This is necessary because rules governing data protection require a signature from each member for receipt of the photos and pictures of offenders who have not been active for over 13 weeks have to be collected and destroyed.
New technology would allow the photos to be loaded onto a memory stick and viewed on a hand held monitor. Because the stick can be password protected with individual passwords for each member it complies with the requirement to protect data about individuals. The information on the memory sticks can also be programmed to expire after 13 weeks obviating the need to collect old photos.
The exact costs of the scheme are still being investigated but a Home Office representative has indicated that there may be capital funding available for innovative ideas to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.
