Letter to the editor: The real problem is drinking to get drunk!
Aaron Paine said: "What is all the fuss about? Hasn't anyone ever been to Europe before, where in most countries bars are allowed to stay open for 12-hour shifts, starting from for example 2pm until 2am etc, etc?" (see letter on 18 January)
1) The 'binge mentality' is nothing to do with our opening hours. It's our culture where yobbishness and 'what's it to you?' selfishness are tolerated, even celebrated, After all, it's usually just 'a bunch of lads having a laugh', isn't it? The difference in Europe is that people there don't drink to get drunk. Except for the visiting Brits, that is.
2) 'Flexible opening hours' doesn't mean that pubs will all close at different times. Get real! If one pub stays open till 2, why would its neighbours opt to close at 12? Or 1am? They'd just be handing over their possible last hour's takings to the competition. And even if they did close at different times, that just means shouting, bladdered morons keeping us awake from 11 till 3, rather than just from 11 till 12 as currently happens. Can't wait!
