Historic hotel to provide homes and offices
An historic former hotel and office building near Brighton seafront could now be turned into a development combining a hotel, homes and offices.
Royal York Buildings overlooking the Old Steine was initially put on the market by its owners Brighton & Hove City Council in October 2003. A number of options for development were mooted (health clinic, office block…) but none came to fruition.
City planners now believe the best way to enhance the building and preserve its historic integrity is to accept a mixture of activities. These could include hotel, residential and offices uses. The exact balance could be subject to negotiation with prospective developers. A report to the council’s policy committee on November 17 recommends re-marketing the building with a view to securing new bids by mid-December.
