Brighton & Hove’s new central Jubilee Library is scheduled to open on Thursday March 3 2005. North Laine traders have over the last year been assessing the implications that this new development, with its shops and cafes, will have on trade.
The North Laine Traders Association has worked very closely with the council to ensure that the North Laine is ready for the influx of people (the library is three times the size of the old one) and is in a good position to take advantage of the new opportunities presented by the development.
As a result of ongoing discussion with David Panter and his colleagues improvements have been made to Sydney Street and further improvements are planned for Gardner Street. The NLTA continues to lobby for clear signage and easy access.
The date chosen for the opening is World Book Day – a celebration of books and reading designated by Unesco, covering 30 countries last year. A week of high-profile author events and activities is planned.
The temporary library at Vantage Point near Preston Circus will close at 4pm on Saturday October 30. All Brighton & Hove’s 14 other libraries will be available during the closure period. Further information is available on www.citylibraries.info or 01273 296956.
