Brighton's key bus routes to be improved
Project Centre is working with Brighton & Hove City Council to improve the operation of the North Street/ Western Road Bus Corridor. The improvements should reduce congestion and improve the relaibility of the bus services.
This corridor presently operates as a bus-only street with a number of prohibited points of entry. The current regulations are often flouted and to simplify the scheme and improve enforcement the City Council has, after extensive consultation, approved some changes to this corridor.
To see the proposed changes click on the link below. These measures primarily involve:
- Creation of a with-flow bus lane operating within the hours of 8am-8pm in a short length of Queens Road on the southbound approach to the Clock Tower Traffic Signals. (This extends the existing prohibition times from 8am-6pm by two hours)
- Extesion of hours of the existing restricted areas in front of Churchill Square and at the western end of North Street to 8am-8pm and define them as 'Bus only routes'.
- Introduction of three 24 hour contra-flow bus lanes in Western Road, North Street and Dyke Road. * Amend the existing entry restriction into Clarence Square from Western Road.
- Withdrawal of a number of the existing entry restrictions to assist servicing. Changes to the signing have now started for the scheme to come into effect on the 24th September.
