Boots axe foot & mouth services
The high street chemist is ending dentistry, chiropody and laser surgery techniques after only five years and losses £16m in 2003
The closures are part of a radical strategy by the new Chief Executive Richard Baker and will affect 850 jobs by the end of the year.
The services were started because the previous management were not convinced that Boots health and beauty products had substantial growth potential in the face of competition from the supermarkets, especially Tesco and Asda, but the new management had adopted a contrary philosophy. The introduction of new ranges and substantial price cutting would suggest that the company is prepared to compete with supermarkets relying on its substantial brand name to give it the edge.
