According to law firm Peninsula the amount of time businesses spend dealing with red tape has tripled since 1997. To keep on the right side of the law a small or medium sized enterprise needs to be spending 10 hours a week dealing with issues relating to legislation.
Regulations surrounding employment law, health and safety, equality and the environment have intensified in recent years and become much more onerous for small businesses who can't afford a dedicated HR professional.
Peninsula interviewed 3,000 businesses and found that 84% believed that their business would be much more profitable if they could devote less time to red tape.
The Business Forum has just won some funding from the LSC to help businesses in the hospitality and retail sectors to get on top of legislation and to build a strong and stable work force.
