A new residents' parking scheme proposed for the St James' Street and Queens Park area has met with the approval of the majority of residents. However, businesses are generally against the scheme.
The area, situated between the existing central Brighton and Royal Sussex County Hospital scheme, has extreme parking pressures being close to the city centre, seafront, the hospital and major employers such as American Express.
Around 8,700 leaflets were delivered to residents and business employees and 1,366 questionnaires were returned, giving a response rate of 16%. Of these, 59% of residents supported the proposals, 36% were opposed and 4% expressed no opinion.
Out of the 94 questionnaires returned from businesses, 33% were in support and 65% were opposed; 2% gave no opinion.
The outcome of the consultation will be considered by the environment committee on 1 July when councillors will decide whether to progress the scheme. If agreed, it would come into operation during winter, 2004.
