Talks over construction training deal on King Alfred site
Developer Karis and the City Council together with the T&G Union are negotiating a deal to use the development of the King Alfred site for work experience for new entrants into the construction trades
With an estimated 450 to 500 people working on the site once development starts a target of 10% for apprentices has been provisionally set which should be a small but meaningful contribution to filling the skills shortages in the industry. If more developers follow suit there are several large projects in the pipeline that could also have construction training agreements attached e.g. Brighton Centre, the Marina and the Ice Arena at Black Rock.
The training initiative could be linked to recognised qualifications via City College which has a construction skills department. A formal planning application is expected in March 2005.
