Brighton Festival finances confirm contribution of cultural sector to local economy
The most successful festival to date in terms of ticket sales has confirmed that the cultural industries in the city make a hard cash contribution to our economy.
The box office took just under £800,000, which is a 25% increase on 2003 and events as diverse as the Battle of Algiers/Asian Dub Foundation and an audience with Michael Portillo were sold out. An estimated 100,000 people enjoyed the free events like the street theatre in the North Laine and over 300,000 attended over 700 performances in total.
For the first time the organisers undertook an economic impact assessment for this year’s festival in an effort to get a clearer picture of its contribution to the wider economy.
