How do travel options rate?

Brighton & Hove Economic Partnership Travel Questionnaire results

A wide range of businesses across the city responded to our questionnaire (21% response rate) about the importance of various means of transport to their commercial activity.

Including questions on road, rail and air travel the questionnaire is probably the largest of its kind every undertaken in the city.

70% of businesses stated that rail travel was either important or very important to their business with 26% rating it not very important. The main finding for rail travel is that while the number, frequency and journey time of trains to both Gatwick and London is generally considered to be very good the reliability of both services is less well received (58% recorded good or fairly good for Gatwick and 46% for London) 50% of respondents said that better east/west links e.g. Hastings/Ashford) would be important for clients or staff commuting into the city. It is telling for instance that there is no direct link between Hastings and Brighton until after 10.00 a.m.

A major new Park & Ride on the outskirts of the city was cited as being important or very important by over 74% of respondents and this should be considered very carefully by politicians waiting for the results of the consultant’s report on potential sites.

The survey also asked about air travel, which was considered to be less important to the city than rail travel although many of the respondents may not have calculated the importance of Gatwick to our tourist industry. 31% of respondents thought Gatwick was important for their business accompanied by calls for more flights to European, American and UK destinations.

Top destinations for business flights were France, Spain and Scotland. 35% of respondents thought that flights to northern Europe and UK destinations from Shoreham airport would be a useful addition to the city’s travel options.

The results of the survey will be used to negotiate with travel operators to improve and enhance services used by Brighton & Hove businesses.
