Dixons chops dead wood in the High Street
There is a certain irony to the news that electronics retailer Dixons is to close 106 of its smaller high street stores that it considers do not perform well enough to justify the rental levels being paid.
Sales generally at the Dixons fascia have been disappointing since Christmas and it is now taking a radical look at its 320 outlets, 13 of which are in Sussex. Ironically it was the willingness of mobile phone outlets (like Dixons owned The Link) to pay whatever rent was asked without quibble for high street locations that helped to drive up the rents over the past ten years that Dixons now seems to be reluctant to pay.
They have not announced the details of closures but have indicated that those stores affected would be within five miles of another group store. The Churchill Square outlet in Brighton is unlikely to be affected but the much smaller George Street, Hove branch certainly fits the 5 mile criteria.
