CDHA Hyde scheme wins Preston Barracks
Developers CDHA/Hyde have been awarded the contract to develop the Preston Barracks site on the Lewes Road which, at just under 2.3 hectares is one of the largest remaining brownfield development sites within the city boundary.
The scheme will provide over 1000 jobs and over 400 homes with 40% of the total being affordable housing. Because the site is owned by the local authority it is able to insist on 40% affordable housing despite the Local plan inspector recommending a 30% maximum.
The development will include an open, landscaped courtyard and an innovation centre which will be managed by the adjoining Brighton University. The Brighton & Hove Economic Partnership (BHEP) was a member of the consultation panel that helped to assess the bids for the site and it will be making a response to the full planning application which is expected in December.
