At our January street reps meeting we came to the conclusion that many of our efforts as an association are aimed at initiatives and plans which other agencies such as Brighton & Hove council have instigated. Whilst many schemes are excellent and we would want to join in with them, shouldn’t we be setting our own agenda for the benefit of business in North Laine?
Our area has long been dubbed the Bohemian quarter, but locals will tell you that it was once the Artisan quarter, a place where people produced , bought and sold a wide range of services and goods.
Without doubt it is the buzzing, charismatic focus of Brighton’s retail experience but there are signs that change is on the way. Major developments at the southern end of North Laine, in Jubilee Street and to the north on the station site are both indicators of influences that will be challenging for all of us who run businesses in North Laine.
Since we started in 1989 we have always taken a positive approach to our City Centre partners. Perhaps now is the time to share with them our vision of the way we would like to see the commercial side of North Laine evolve over the next 10 years!
Over the next few months we will be holding a series of meetings to discuss with our members their views and aspirations for our future. If you would like to be involved and help create our “vision” contact Peter Stocker on 601641.
