When it comes to shopping online nerds in anoraks can take a back seat because this is now a female domain. A new report from Verdict says women are the driving force behind the online retail boom.
Last year, the average female online shopper spent 71.4% more than in 2002, a growth rate six times faster than for men. This explains why online clothing sales are growing at a faster rate than computer games and electronics. And it presents an ideal opportunity for clothing and accessories retailers to supplement their beleaguered shop takings.
Overall, online retailers saw sales boosted by 36.1% last year, almost ten times faster than the total retail spend. Web-based shopping is now worth £4.9 billion, or 1.9% of all retail spending.
