Big Plans for Brighton’s Ship Street Post Office Site
The only site in the city centre that might just be big enough for a department store is up for sale and has attracted considerable interest.
The Post Office in Ship Street is bigger than it looks because it has a maze of sheds and courtyards behind it that the public never see. House of Fraser have been interested in finding a site in the city for the last decade but the local authority is likely to favour a mix of retail and housing which might constrict the size of the site and make it less attractive for development as a department store.
Architect firm Alan Phillips (see earlier story on floating island off the West Pier in knowledgebase) have come up with a proposal to open up the area and make it a part of The Lanes proper with pedestrian passageways and open spaces with the working title of the “New Lanes”.
The Post Office is considering at least four proposals and planning applications are expected to be lodged shortly
