Brighton has scored well against other retail centres in the UK in a new report by chartered surveyors and property consultants, Gerald Eve.
The study ranks the UK's leading High Streets in terms of overall volume of retail floorspace, the amount of fashion shopping, the quality and quantity of top retail brands present and how convenient it is for the shopper in terms of parking, accessibility and personal safety.
In terms of current status, a position of 25th amongst the country's Leading High Street locations is a creditable achievement. "Brighton is a uniquely vibrant retail centre. The Lanes is obviously the star attraction, but Churchill Square is also of a high standard and provides the necessary mainstream retail provision. The redevelopment of the Hanningtons department store site merely adds to this characterful retail offer," says Michael Moran, senior researcher at Gerald Eve.
Brighton's shopper facilities - toilets, signage etc - are rated the best of our key centres. However, whilst the city's leisure facilities and public transport score well, accessibility, parking and the retail environment rated poorly.
In summary, Brighton emerges with ‘strong retail prospects’ for the coming five-year period according to the report. "The city's retail offer is improving and with such progress comes momentum. Existing retailers will be looking to keep pace with new arrivals. This optimism for the local retail market is borne out by our surveys revealing that some 56% of local retailers surveyed expected their trade to improve over the coming three years - against only 2% that felt conditions would deteriorate. There is a feeling though that this opportunity is not being better exploited through enhanced marketing and promotion. In addition, the retail environment is dated and tawdry in places and generally lets the city down, so it too needs attention" says Moran.
