Redhill Close Development Site Opposition
A disused football pitch at the foot of Redhill Close in Westdene has become a battleground between developers that want to put up over 100 houses on plot and residents that want to protect it for their own ends.
The Sussex Overseas Housing Association (SOHA) had to withdraw and application after residents made multiple objections. The scheme was unique in that all the housing would have been affordable – the first such development of its kind in the city. Residents have now formed their own association and submitted a planning application for a football pitch, community centre and gardens on the site claiming that housing would put too much pressure on the environment and local services. This is an example of the problems that the city will face in the future as it tries to secure enough land for affordable housing without which our future is very uncertain. The SOHA is expected to submit another application in the near future.
