Resurfacing works in Western Road

Resurfacing works are due to commence on Monday 20 October 2003 in Western Road and are expected to be completed within three weeks. Advance advisory signing has been erected in Western Road for road users.

The work will be carried out by Tarmac Limited and will be supervised, by Owen Williams consultants, on behalf of Brighton and Hove City Council. The surfacing works are essential for the strengthening and durability of the highway.

Western Road will be re-surfaced from just east of Montpelier Road junction, to the end of the new bus corridor improvement works, just west of Regent Hill junction. Additionally, a new road surface will be laid, in the northern section of Clarence Square, as far east as Cannon Place.

During the works, a number of temporary traffic control measures will be operated. These are essential for the safe completion of the works. Alternate one-way working will be operated, during site working hours, and temporary signing will guide traffic through the works areas.

The work will be carried out in six main phases and during these phases the adjacent side roads will be subject to temporary closure to vehicular access, into or out of Western Road, during working hours only.

The main works will be carried out between 0930hrs. and 1800hrs. on weekdays only, ie. Monday to Friday only. It will, however, be necessary to carry out works around the newly constructed kerb build-out, adjacent to Woolworths, ( 183 Western Road ), during two evenings.

During these evening works, a temporary road closure of Western road will operate, from 1900hrs, at this point. Bus services will continue to operate, during the works, although they will follow alternative routes during the two temporary evening closures. It will be necessary to temporarily suspend the use of some local bus stops during the various construction phases and temporary signing will advise when this is the case.

For the safety of pedestrians, the works areas will be guarded with temporary barriers, and pedestrians will not be able to cross the works areas, but should divert around them following the temporary guarding measures.

During the works phases, deliveries to adjacent premises will be restricted to outside of the surfacing works times, ie. deliveries and vehicular access, to Western Road frontages within the works, will not be possible between 0930hrs. and 1800hrs.

Local businesses are requested to advise their suppliers about the works and to adjust delivery times to avoid the surfacing work times. No parking will be possible within the works areas.

There will inevitably be some disruption and delays to road users and local premises. All road users are asked to be patient and careful at all times.

Further details of the particular traffic control measures anticipated, together with draft timetable details and action are listed on the link below and may be subject to amendment due to weather conditions. Liaison will be carried out on site during the works.

During the works, both the contractor’s staff and Owen Williams’ Clerk of Works will be present on site and will try to assist with any problems. In the meantime, if you have any queries, then please contact John Chapman on the 01273 897161.
