Brighton’s First Car Club Launched
The Hanover area of the city has become the first to embrace the concept of the car club where members of the scheme pay an annual fee to have access to shared cars that they can book as and when they need them for as little as an hour at a time.
The idea is that people only use the car when they need it and give up ownership of their own cars thereby reducing congestion in the city and pressure on parking. Mature schemes in other cities even have dedicated spaces around the city centre where car club vehicles get priority parking space.
The Hanover scheme has about 25 members and was part funded by a National Lottery grant of £34,000 which was matched by the local authority. The scheme is the result of much hard work by Cllr Joyce Edmund-Smith the Chair of the council’s sustainability commission and it is hoped that it will spread into other areas of the city.
