Giant Tesco Store Opens in Hove
In the week that Tesco announced that it takes £12.30 of every £100 spent in the entire country, the chain opened its 751st store in Church Road, Hove.
Built on the old gasworks site the development has been controversial because of arguments about its indirect benefits to the surrounding district centre. The most controversial aspect is undoubtedly the one and a half hours of free parking (free for Tesco shoppers if they spend more than £5.) but a whopping £25 fee for the next 90 minutes rising to £50 for anything over three hours.
Labour councillor Simon Battle has questioned the wisdom of this policy because it will not encourage shoppers to visit the nearby George Street which he also claims is poorly signposted from the Tesco site. The Council sacrificed their own George Street shoppers car park to facilitate the development of the superstore.
