Tourism rises to 6th place in UK employment league
According to a new report by the government body Visit Britain tourism is now the sixth largest sector on UK industry in terms of providing employment with 1.8m jobs. While 0.3m are based in the capital, the remaining 1.5m are spread across the country. It is estimated that Brighton relies on the sector for 13,000 jobs.
Despite the fear of terrorism and disasters like foot-and-mouth disease it is estimated that 1.5m people from the EU visited Britain last year but American visitors continue to decline. There is however, some evidence to suggest that targeted advertising campaigns are starting to have some effect in turning this round.
The Brighton & Hove Economic Partnership (BHEP) working in conjunction with the city council is in the process of formulating a 10 year tourism strategy for the city.
