A shortlist of four organisations has been drawn up as contenders to develop one of the city's largest brownfield sites.
Following the publication of the Preston Barracks Masterplan, Development Brief and Supplementary Planning Guidance (all of which are available at www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/prestonbarracks), the Preston Barracks Steering Group received 18 expressions of interest for the development competition. Following an assessment of the bids, four organisations have now been shortlisted to submit full applications for Preston Barracks by 31st October 2003. These are: RH Partnership Architects; Rokeagle; Taylor Woodrow and Urban Catalyst Ltd.
The City Council is currently working with the Regional Development Agency (SEEDA) to establish an appropriate evaluation and assessment process for these submissions.
The submissions will be required to meet the key principals for a sustainable mixed-use development as set out in the master plan for the 2.7 hectare site. The master plan calls for facilities for 1,100 jobs, training opportunities, 260 units of housing (110 of which will be affordable) and a range of community facilities.
The Council hopes to have chosen a developer by December 2003.
