|Wilkinson Eyre's Barratt/Brunswick Scheme|
Independent Consultants Back Gehry’s King Alfred Scheme
Consultants Hill Smith Associates were commissioned by Brighton& Hove Council to investigate the long term impact of the two King Alfred schemes on the economy. The conclusion was that the Gehry scheme would add about £10m more than the Barratt/Brunswick scheme but at a cost of less housing.
Both would provide about the same number of jobs but the Gehry scheme was estimated to be worth between £25m and £32m while the competition would bring in only £15m to £21m. The difference is accounted for by the number of tourists that are predicted to come to the city to see the two buildings.
The bold design and international reputation of Gehry’s other buildings is reckoned to have the edge over the Barratt/Brunswick scheme designed by Wilkinson Eyre and ten time more visitors are predicted for the 38 storey towers.
