Data Protection Scam On the Increase
Trading Standards are reporting an increase in the scam whereby businesses receive official looking letters demanding that they pay £95 to register with the Information Commissioner under the Data Protection Act 1984.
The letters, which originate from several locations in the UK including Stoke and Blackpool, mostly all contain the words Data Protection Agency in the title. This gives the impression that they originate from the agency itself but they do not. If a business needs to register it costs £35 and the forms can be obtained directly by calling the Agency directly on 01625 545700. If any business receives a demand they should send it, together with the envelope it arrived in, to Michelle Vaughn at the Office of Fair Trading. Fleet Bank House. 2-6 Salisbury Square. London EC4A 8JX
