The Chair of the Brighton & Hove Hotels Association - Roger Marlowe - has called for city leaders to back proposals for a futuristic, 21st Century structure to replace the West Pier
London architects AROS have come up with an outline for a structure that would be thoroughly modern against the backdrop of Regency splendour on Kings Rd. Unlike traditional piers mounted on piles driven into the seabed the new structure would float and fall and rise with the tides.
Conservationists are keen to see the old West Pier reconstructed but there is now a serious debate about the merits of such a scheme given the extensive damage and loss to the original.
Roger Marlowe says: - "We should have something stunning that looks forward, not backwards replacing something old. This is a great opportunity for a 21st Century pier that makes a modern statement. We have inherited some great architecture and I think we should bequeath our successors the same"
