Hotel Star Ratings Muddle
The Culture minister Kim Howells announced at the launch of the "Enjoy England" campaign that he wants to radically overhaul the star ratings system used to let the public know what standards they can expect from hotels and guest houses.
He called the current rating "shambolic" and hinted that he might introduce a new system endorsed by the government to reduce the different star ratings (AA, RAC and national tourist board) to a single system. A similar simplification was mooted three years ago and met with general agreement by English tourism bodies but was rejected by the Scottish and Welsh tourist because they felt that it was not appropriate for many of their family run guest houses that would not be able to attain even one star without considerable additional expense.
