Businesses vote 'Yes' for Christmas lights in Brighton
Brighton will celebrate Christmas in style this year thanks to the traders who have supported the successful Business Improvement District.
The BID campaign, promoted by the Business Forum, began in earnest in January 2006, and the positive result announced on 30 May will mean a really professional display of Christmas lights for the BID area this year. The area covers parts of the North Laine, North Street, the pedestrianised section of East Street, and Meeting House Lane and Market Street in The Lanes. The streets were self-selecting as the traders indicated that they were supportive of the principle of establishing a BID, also that they would like to see the money raised (over £1 million over 5 years) spent on Christmas Lights, and extra security and marketing for their area. The next stage of the BID is for a BID Board to be elected to represent the businesses in the designated area. Election nominations must be received by the Business Forum by close of business on Wednesday 14 June – please be sure to get your vote in! City centre manager, Soozie Campbell said, “We are obviously delighted by this result …we now feel confident about progressing the projects identified because we know that we have a strong majority of traders behind us. It means that we can now have the really spectacular Christmas lights display that Brighton deserves to have. We can also promote shopping and eating in Brighton on a scale that has not been done before and with our increased security we can ensure that visitors to our city don’t see the signs of crime and vandalism that would stop them coming back again."
