Do-it-yourself Public Relations: Getting your Name in the Papers

Date: 6 Nov, 4 Dec 09 & 29 Jan 10 - Time: Full Day

This course is for any business wanting to raise their profile through the media but without blowing the budget on a PR agency. By the end of the first day of the course you will have the basis of a press release about your business, you’ll know who to send it to and what the press will be expecting from you. You will also have the chance to learn the tricks that will make your press release stand out and maximise your chances of coverage.

Who should attend?

The course is designed for business owners, entrepreneurs and those working in a business or other organisation in a marketing or communications role. It will also be useful for those who have undertaken PR in the past but want to refresh or build on their skills.

What will I get out of it?

By the end of the training you will:

  • Have a basic understanding of how the media and journalists work
  • Know how to identify the potential stories within your business
  • Understand how and when to engage with the media
  • Know how to write and pitch a press release, and have the chance to write a basic press release before the end of the session
  • Gain an understanding of how to build on coverage to maintain a media presence

The first, full day of the course will cover why you should undertake PR and what it can do for your business, understanding how the media works, making your approach to the media, how to write a press release and case studies and interviews

The second session is a half day four weeks later. This session will allow you to report back on your PR activity using the press release written in session 1, and explore issues.

The third session, also a half day, will allow for further feedback on your continuing PR activities and also look at building a long-term PR strategy and timetable.

Who is leading the course?

The course is led by journalist, PR consultant and media trainer, Steve Bustin of Vada Media. Steve has an extensive background in the media and PR, having been a broadcast journalist for BBC News, and now a print journalist writing for publications including The Times, The Pink Paper, Absolute Brighton and Gay Times.
