We will be joined for breakfast in February by Katie Mintram, director of Yellowave. Yellowave is a unique Brighton based beach sports company run by Katie in partnership with other directors; husband, Spencer and father, Alan Randall.
As a keen beach volleyball player who has played on the national circuit as well as in California and Australia, Katie had a vision of creating a venue that would bring people together through sport and so whilst the concept for Yellowave was easily born neither Katie, nor any of the directors, had ever run a business before.
Their greatest challenge in succeeding was to convince others of her dream and its financial viability. It was an untried idea and she had no previous business experience. There were serious concerns about such a weather dependant facility. On top of that she had to raise £600K to build the facility, develop the design working with architects, contractors and structural engineers and of course gain planning permission on Brighton beach.
Of course, it did all happen and Yellowave opened on Brighton beach in March 2007. Since then the company has won “The Best New Kids on the Block” category at the Brighton and Hove Business Awards, Katie won the NatWest/Mail on Sunday Everywoman award for inspirational leadership in her age category, and Yellowave has attracted widespread media coverage.
In 2008 Yellowave hosted the UK’s first beach volleyball World Championships and became Brighton’s only 2012 training base. Discussions are now taking place to replicate the scheme elsewhere in the UK including at inland city locations.
